BIS Organizes Workshop to Accelerate Development of National Agriculture Code

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has convened a workshop to expedite the development of the National Agriculture Code (NAC). Recognizing the pivotal role of agriculture in India’s economy and the need for optimal resource utilization and technological advancements, the BIS aims to create a comprehensive code that ensures best practices across the agricultural value chain. A press release on the workshop was issued on September 27, 2024.

The NAC is envisioned to encompass emerging agricultural technologies, innovative farming practices, and regional variations across India. By identifying gaps in standardization and developing appropriate standards, the code will provide a framework for enhancing quality and efficiency in agriculture.

The workshop, held at the National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS), Noida, brought together stakeholders from central and state governments, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutions, state agricultural universities, and industry associations. This collaborative effort echoes the success of other national codes developed by the BIS, such as the National Building Code (NBC) and the National Electrical Code (NEC).

The Director General of BIS emphasized the significance of the NAC in establishing a quality culture in Indian agriculture. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive code that provides guidance to policymakers and farmers alike. Key considerations for developing the NAC include its approach, structure, engagement methods, institutional readiness, and the importance of demonstrations.

The DDG (Standardization) at BIS underscored the immense potential of the NAC to transform India’s agricultural sector. By addressing the challenges faced by farmers and promoting sustainable practices, the NAC can significantly improve the livelihoods of millions of people in rural India.

During the workshop, participants were divided into seven groups to focus on specific aspects of agriculture, including crop selection, land preparation, sowing/transplanting, irrigation/drainage, soil health management, plant health management, harvesting/threshing, primary processing, post-harvest practices, sustainability, record maintenance, traceability, and smart agriculture. The workshop concluded with the identification of nodal organizations and experts to contribute to the NAC’s development.

Agriculture is a cornerstone of India’s economy, providing livelihoods to millions and ensuring food security. With over 60% of the population residing in rural areas, agriculture plays a vital role in the country’s development. India’s agricultural sector produces a significant portion of the world’s staple crops, contributing to global food security.
