Government Proposes New Anti-Tobacco Measures for Online Content

The Central Government has proposed amendments to the Cigarette and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Rules, 2024. These amendments aim to strengthen anti-tobacco measures in online curated content platforms.  This notification was issued on September 13, 2024.

All films and online content, regardless of origin, will be required to display anti-tobacco health spots and warnings.

Health spots will be shown at the beginning and middle of films, while a static message will appear at the bottom of the screen during scenes depicting tobacco use.

A non-skippable audio-visual disclaimer on the ill-effects of tobacco will be shown at the beginning of films and upon opening online platforms.

These proposed amendments are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to combat tobacco use and protect public health. By increasing exposure to anti-tobacco messages, the government aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and discourage its consumption.
