NBEMS Revises Its Stipend Guidelines for Trainee Doctors

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has released revised stipend guidelines for trainee doctors enrolled in NBEMS-accredited programs. These guidelines supersede the previous guidelines issued on April 2nd, 2019. This notice was issued on September 9, 2024.

Key Points of the Notice

Accredited hospitals and medical institutions are obligated to pay stipends to NBEMS trainees. Trainees will receive a basic stipend based on one of the following categories:

  • NBEMS Prescribed Stipend

According to the NBEMS stipend policy, the hospital shall have to pay the NBEMS trainees a BASIC stipend. This is the minimum stipend set by NBEMS.

  • State Government Stipend

Private or State Government hospitals shall have to pay the NBEMS prescribed stipend or the stipend offered by the respective State Government to its trainees. However, they must pay the higher stipend of the two.

  • Central Government Stipend

Similarly, Railway, ESIC, Central PSUs, Central Autonomous Bodies, and Central Government hospitals shall offer either the NBEMS prescribed stipend or a stipend as per Central Government/Authority guidelines, whichever is higher. These are depicted in a tabular form as under:

Stipend for NBEMS trainees in Railway, ESIC, Central PSUs, Central Autonomous & Central Government Hospitals / Medical Institutions

Trainees in Direct 6 year NBEMS courses will receive a stipend equal to Super Specialty trainees in their respective years, provided they clear the DNB Part-I exam.

Hospitals and institutions are required to adjust stipend rates periodically to reflect revisions made by State or Central Governments for their respective trainee programs.

NBEMS accredited hospitals can choose to offer additional monthly stipends above the prescribed minimum.

While providing accommodation is desirable, hospitals cannot reduce the stipend amount in exchange for providing housing.

Trainees and hospitals can access the NBEMS communication portal through the Communication Web Portal on the NBEMS website.
