Haryana Government Announces New Paid Holiday

The Haryana Labour Department issued a notification on August 28th 2024 declaring that Tuesday, October 1, 2024, will be a paid holiday for all shops and commercial establishments within the state of Haryana. This decision is part of the government’s effort to make sure that employees who are registered voters have the opportunity to cast their votes without any work-related constraints.

The Governor of Haryana has exercised powers under Section 28 of the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, to make this provision.

Why This Holiday Matters

The announcement is more than just a routine administrative action; it reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen has the chance to exercise their democratic right. Elections are a cornerstone of democracy, and making voting accessible is crucial for a healthy electoral process. By providing a paid holiday, the government removes a potential barrier for many workers who might otherwise face difficulties in finding time to vote.

The Haryana government’s initiative underscores the importance of civic engagement and the role that employers play in facilitating it. By granting a paid holiday, the government is not only adhering to legal requirements but also encouraging a more inclusive electoral process where every voter can take part in shaping their state’s future.
