Enhanced Parking Fees For Private Vehicles In Delhi

The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) has directed the urban local bodies in Delhi to review and rationalize parking charges for private vehicles. This direction aims to address the significant contribution of vehicular emissions to air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR), particularly during the winter season.

The CAQM has highlighted the ever-growing fleet of private vehicles in Delhi-NCR as a major contributor to air pollution and traffic congestion. While previous efforts to promote cleaner public transport and rationalize parking fees have shown positive results, the need for further action has become evident.

The Commission has issued a directive to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB) to comprehensively review and revise parking charges in their respective jurisdictions. The revised charges should be based on local area-specific integrated parking management plans and pricing strategies and should be completed by September 30, 2024.

The CAQM has emphasized the importance of public dissemination of the revised parking charges well in advance. The strict implementation of these revised charges should be completed across Delhi by November 1, 2024.

By rationalizing parking charges, the CAQM aims to discourage the use of private vehicles and promote the adoption of more sustainable modes of transportation. This initiative is expected to contribute to improved air quality and reduced traffic congestion in the NCR.
