Natamycin Recognized As Food Additives For Fermented Milks And Dairy Based Desserts

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. The draft regulations, titled the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2024, aim to introduce new permitted food additives for certain dairy products.

The proposed amendments would allow the use of natamycin (INS 235) in chakka and shrikhand, two traditional Indian dairy desserts. Natamycin is a natural antifungal agent that can help prevent spoilage and maintain the quality of these products.

The FSSAI has invited public comments on the draft regulations, providing an opportunity for stakeholders to review and provide feedback before the finalization of the amendments within 60 days of publication.

Objections or suggestions may be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and
Standards Authority of India, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi- 110002 or sent on email at
regulation@fssai.gov.in

The proposed changes are expected to benefit both consumers and producers of dairy products by ensuring the safety and quality of these products.
