FSSAI Withdraws Prior Advisory On Misleading A1-A2 Milk Product Claims

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an order withdrawing its warning against misleading claims made by e-commerce food businesses selling milk and milk products labeled as “A1” and “A2.” This withdrawal was issued on August 26, 2024.

It may be recalled that FSSAI had issued a warning against misleading claims made by e-commerce food businesses selling milk and milk products labeled as “A1” and “A2.” This advisory was issued on August 21, 2024.

The FSSAI had previously determined that such claims were inaccurate and violated the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The distinction between A1 and A2 milk lies in the structure of beta casein protein, and claims regarding A2 proteins in milk fat products were deemed misleading.

Now, by the present order FSSAI has withdrawn its earlier advisory. FSSAI has notified its decision to withdraw the advisory, pending further consultation and engagement with stakeholders.
