Millets Grading and Marking Rules, 2024

In order to promote the consumption of nutritious millets, the Government of India has introduced the Millets Grading and Marking Rules, 2024. These rules outline stringent quality standards for various millets, including sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, and others. This notification was issued on August 8, 2024.

The new regulations aim to ensure that consumers have access to high-quality millets. Key provisions include:

The rules specify detailed quality standards for different types of millets, covering aspects such as purity, moisture content, and foreign matter.

Millets will be required to be packed in standardized packaging with clear labeling, including grade, net weight, and nutritional information.

The rules mandate adherence to food safety standards, including restrictions on pesticide residues and heavy metals.

Packers and processors of millets will need to meet specific hygiene and storage standards to maintain product quality.

These rules aim to enhance the reputation of Indian millets in both domestic and international markets. They are expected to boost the cultivation and consumption of millets, contributing to the nation’s nutritional security and farmer’s income.
