Kerala’s Karmachari Scheme: Balancing Work and Studies for Students

The Government of Kerala has introduced the Karmachari Scheme to integrate work with studies for students. This initiative covers various sectors, including star hotels, supermarkets, malls, food outlets, textiles, and resorts. This notification was published on July 22, 2024.

Under this scheme, students can work up to 4 hours unpaid daily, or 6 hours on holidays, without affecting their study time. Employers in these sectors must ensure that work schedules align with students’ academic commitments and that electronic devices are used without disrupting work. Government-mandated wage standards must be followed, and any emergencies or grievances should be reported without delay.

A new job portal has been launched to streamline the process. It allows students to register, access job opportunities, and receive updates, while employers can submit establishment details and wage information. The scheme aims to provide a safe, balanced work-study experience across diverse industries.
