No Safety Concerns at Nuclear Power Plants, Says Union Minister

Dismissing any safety concerns related to nuclear power plants, the Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy asserted that the facilities are operated with stringent safety protocols. The Minister emphasized that the highly trained personnel operating these plants are licensed by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and adhere to rigorous procedures subject to regular review and upgradation. This was reiterated in a press release dated July 31, 2024.

To address public health concerns, the Minister highlighted the extensive epidemiological surveys conducted in areas surrounding nuclear power plants. These studies, involving reputed medical colleges and the Tata Memorial Hospital, have consistently concluded that the operation of these plants poses no health risks to the local population.

India is committed to expanding its nuclear energy capacity. Currently, nine nuclear power reactors are under construction, with plans for twelve more. Additionally, a new Nuclear Fuel Complex is being established in Rajasthan to bolster the country’s nuclear fuel production capabilities.
