The Indian government has intensified its efforts to ensure the quality and safety of chemicals and petrochemicals through a series of regulatory measures. A press release on current regulatory measures was issued on July 26, 2024.
Key Initiatives
Mandatory BIS Standards
The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals has introduced mandatory BIS standards for both imported and domestically produced chemicals. This move aims to protect consumers, the environment, and prevent unfair trade practices.
Insecticides Regulation
The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has enacted the Insecticides Act, 1968, to regulate the production and sale of insecticides, safeguarding human and animal health.
Hazardous Chemicals Management
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has implemented the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules and the Chemical Accident Emergency Planning, Preparedness and Response Rules to manage hazardous chemicals effectively.
Fertilizer Quality Control
The Fertilizer Control Order, 1985 ensures the availability of quality fertilizers to farmers through strict quality standards and regulations.
Impact on Exports
India’s chemical and petrochemical exports have witnessed fluctuations in recent years. While major chemicals exports have increased, petrochemical exports have declined. The government is closely monitoring these trends and taking necessary steps to promote exports.
