The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has announced an additional gesture of appreciation for deceased organ donors and their families.
Existing guidelines already provide Rs. 10,000 per deceased donor to cover dignified funeral expenses. This support is available for donors from both government and private hospitals.
New Recognition Program
In addition to the funeral assistance, the MoHFW has authorized a felicitation ceremony. This involves presenting a shawl, certificate with frame, and flowers to the deceased donor’s family member(s) at the time of donation. The maximum cost per donor is Rs. 1,000.
Implementation and Impact
The felicitation ceremony will be organized by the State Organ Transplant Organization (SOTTO). Funds can be used from the SOTTO’s miscellaneous budget within existing grants.
SOTTO representatives will personally visit the donor’s hospital or home to present the tokens of appreciation.
This initiative aims to boost awareness and encourage organ donation by recognizing the generosity of deceased donors and their families.
States have been requested to implement these guidelines effectively. An action report on implementation within a month is sought by the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).
