New Rules for Vehicle Registration in Chandigarh

The Chandigarh Administration Transport Department announced an important update to the vehicle registration rules on July 22nd ,2024.

The new rules are officially called the Chandigarh Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Rules, 2024.

Key Change to Vehicle Registration:

The main change is related to how long you need to own a vehicle before you can keep its registration number.

Amendment to Rule 33(5):

A new proviso has been added after the first proviso in Rule 33(5) of the Chandigarh Motor Vehicle Rules, 1990 (as amended in 2021).

This new proviso states that the retention of a vehicle’s registration mark is only permissible if the registration mark has been in the applicant’s name for at least three years at the time of applying for retention.

Importance of the Change:

This rule aims to ensure that the retention of registration numbers is handled more carefully and responsibly. By requiring a three-year ownership period, the administration hopes to prevent misuse and ensure that the retention process is fair.

These rules come into force from (July 22, 2024).
