The Government of Odisha has revised the minimum wage rates for various types of workers across different sectors on 18th July.
Key Highlights:
- All-Inclusive Wages: The revised minimum wage rates are comprehensive. This means they include basic wages, cost of living allowances, and the cash value of any essential commodities provided.
- Daily Wages Include Rest Days: The daily wage rates also cover the payment for the weekly day of rest. This ensures that workers receive consistent pay throughout the week. These minimum wage rates also apply to employees who are hired by contractors, ensuring fair pay across the board.
- Equal Pay for Disabled Workers and No Gender Discrimination: Disabled workers will receive the same minimum wages as other workers in the same category. This promotes equality and fair treatment in the workplace. There will be no difference in the payment of minimum wages between male and female workers in any employment category. Equal pay for equal work is emphasized.
Categories of Work:
- Unskilled Work: Simple tasks that require little or no skill or experience.
- Semi-skilled Work: Tasks that need some skill or competence, usually acquired through experience or basic training, and can be performed under supervision.
- Skilled Work: Jobs that require a certain level of skill or competence gained through experience or training, involving initiative and judgment.
- Highly Skilled Work: Tasks that require a high degree of perfection and competence, acquired through extensive technical or professional training or long practical experience. These roles often involve significant responsibility and decision-making.
Revised Wage Rates:
- Unskilled: Rs. 450.00 per day
- Semi-skilled: Rs. 500.00 per day
- Skilled: Rs. 550.00 per day
- Highly Skilled: Rs. 600.00 per day
Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA):
In addition to the minimum wages, a Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) will be declared at half-yearly intervals, on 1st April and 1st October.
The VDA will be calculated at the rate of Rs. 2.60 per point rise in the All-India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (base 2016=100), as notified by the Labour Commissioner, Odisha.
These rates ensure that workers in Odisha receive fair compensation for their labor, reflecting the skill and responsibility required for their jobs.
Working Hours: An adult employee is expected to work for eight hours a day, excluding a half-hour rest period.
The revised Minimum Wage Rates will come into effect from July 18th 2024.
