The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued an advisory on 7th October, 2019 with regard to selling of packaged and natural mineral water in open market without BIS number.
The regulation under Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011 requires mandatory BIS certification on packaged water and every food business operators to obtain license or registration before commencement of any food business vide section 31 of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Following clarification has been issued by this Advisory:
- Every food business operator shall obtain FSSAI License.
- In order to manufacture/sell/exhibit for sale of packaged drinking water/mineral water, it is mandatory to obtain BIS Certification.
- The packaging of water shall be done as prescribed under FSS (Packaging and Labelling) Regulation, 2011.
- As per FSS (Advertising and claims) Regulation, 2018, use of fancy name and abbreviations on food products is prohibited.
