Ensuring Dignity and Security: Jharkhand’s Initiative for Gig Workers

In a progressive move towards safeguarding the rights of platform-based gig workers, the Government of Jharkhand has proposed a comprehensive bill aimed at their registration and welfare. This legislative effort underscores the state’s commitment to addressing issues of social security, occupational health, and safety within the gig economy. This notification was published on July 1, 2024.

Under this proposed legislation, platforms will be mandated to ensure transparency in automated systems and provide mechanisms for dispute resolution. A pivotal aspect of the bill includes the establishment of the Jharkhand Platform-Based Gig Workers Welfare Board, tasked with overseeing the implementation of social security schemes and other welfare measures.

The board, comprising various stakeholders, including government officials and nominated representatives, will play a crucial role in formulating and administering schemes for the benefit of registered gig workers. Importantly, the bill also emphasizes inclusivity by ensuring representation from diverse sectors and communities.

This initiative marks a significant step towards creating a conducive environment for gig workers, ensuring their integration into formal social security frameworks while fostering a sustainable gig economy landscape.
