Ensuring Access to Antivenom: Transparency in Hospital Provision

In a recent directive from the Kerala Health Minister, the names of hospitals offering antivenom treatment for snakebites are set to be disclosed. Acting upon the Chief Minister’s guidance, the Health Department has been instructed to publicize these details both at district and state levels. The aim is to ensure swift access to antivenom post-snakebite, eliminating the necessity for extensive travel. Antivenom is now available across various healthcare facilities, from taluk hospitals to medical colleges, reflecting efforts to expand its reach. The Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL) has been mandated to procure ample supplies of antivenom, following discussions in a high-level ministerial meeting chaired by the Health Minister. This move underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility, particularly in emergency situations such as snakebites. This notification was published on July 8, 2024.
