India Leads the Way in Drafting Legal Framework for “One Health” Initiative

Dr. Vinod Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, inaugurated a two-day National Consultation on legal frameworks for the “One Health” initiative. He highlighted India’s advanced position in developing legal frameworks to support this critical program. A press release on this consultation was issued on June 27, 2024.

One Health: A Multi-Sectoral Approach

The “One Health” initiative emphasizes a collaborative approach addressing health challenges at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental well-being. Dr. Paul stressed the interconnectedness of issues like zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and climate change. He emphasized that overcoming these challenges requires breaking down silos between human health, animal health, and environmental sectors.

India’s Leadership in One Health

Dr. Paul also outlined ongoing initiatives like the National Action Plan (NAP) 2.0 for addressing antimicrobial resistance and the conceptualization of a One Health Mission.

Strengthening the Legal Framework

The consultation aims to assess India’s current legal framework for “One Health” activities. Participants will identify gaps and overlaps in existing laws and regulations, fostering multi-sectoral dialogue to develop actionable recommendations. The goal is to create a legal environment that facilitates collaboration between sectors responsible for human, animal, and environmental health.

Collaboration is Key

Other dignitaries, including health and environment ministry secretaries, echoed the importance of collaboration. They emphasized the need for aligned legal frameworks, state engagement, and capacity building for on-ground functionaries. The Ministry of Law and Justice reiterated its support in making necessary legal amendments to achieve “One Health” goals.
