Improved Accessibility Standards For Educational Institutions Included In Rights Of Persons With Disabilities Amendment Rules

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has notified the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Amendment) Rules, 2024. These amendments have come into effect from June 24, 2024.

The amendments integrate the Accessibility Code for Educational Institutions, notified by the Department of School Education and Literacy on January 10, 2024, into the existing Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Rules, 2017.

This inclusion establishes a clear set of accessibility standards that educational institutions must adhere to. These standards aim to ensure inclusive learning environments for students with disabilities.

The accessibility code broadly covers the following categories of children:

  • Loco-motor disabilities and Cerebral Palsy
  • Hearing Impairments
  • Visual Impairments
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Intellectual Impairments
  • Multiple Disabilities and High Support Needs
