Consumer Protection Authority Discusses Warranty Start Date for Appliances

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) met with representatives of major electronic appliance manufacturers to discuss concerns about warranty periods starting on the date of purchase rather than the date of installation. A press release on this meeting was issued on June 22, 2024.

Currently, most appliance warranties begin on the purchase date, leaving consumers with potentially shortened warranties due to the time required for installation.

The CCPA highlighted three key points:

  • Transparency: Consumers deserve clear information about the warranty start date before purchase.
  • Global Best Practices: India’s warranty policies should align with international standards.
  • Consumer Grievance Resolution: Companies must proactively address warranty-related issues.

The Consumer Protection Act defines consumer rights to include clear information about product quality, quantity, and warranty details to protect them from unfair practices.

The meeting acknowledged two categories of appliances:

  1. Plug-and-Play: Appliances like irons or microwaves that require no installation.
  2. Installation Required: Appliances like air conditioners or refrigerators that require professional installation.

The CCPA explored the feasibility of using the installation date as the warranty start date. Measures to prevent misuse and safeguard consumer interests were also discussed.

The companies agreed to address the issue proactively and submit their views within 15 days.
