New Safety Standards Introduced for Electric Vehicles in India

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. This press release was issued on June 22, 2024.

Focus on Powertrain and Batteries

Two new standards, IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, have been introduced. These standards focus on the critical components of EVs – the powertrain (motor, transmission) and batteries. Stringent safety requirements are mandated to ensure reliable and secure operation.

Addressing Emerging Trends

Recognizing the growing popularity of e-rickshaws and E-Karts, BIS has implemented IS 18294: 2023. This standard establishes specific safety guidelines for these vehicles, covering construction, functionality, and driver/passenger safety.

Comprehensive EV Safety Framework

With these new additions, BIS now boasts a total of 30 Indian Standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their supporting infrastructure, including charging systems. This framework aims to promote safe and sustainable electric mobility across India.
