Strengthening Workers’ Financial Security: Goa’s VDA Update

In an effort to bolster the economic security of workers across various industries in Goa, the Office of the Commissioner, Labour, and Employment has issued a significant update. Effective April 1, 2024, the variable dearness allowance (VDA) rates have been revised based on the average consumer price index from July 2023 to December 2023, which reached 400 points. This increase, from a base of 379 points, signifies a notable rise of 21 points. This notification was published on June 18, 2024.

The revised VDA, set at Rs. 125 per day, applies to employees in diverse scheduled employments. These include roles in shops, commercial establishments, residential hotels, restaurants, construction, pharmaceuticals, cashew factories, cinemas, electronics manufacturing, automobile repair, hospitals, printing, food processing, breweries, garment manufacturing, brickworks, sawmills, agriculture, and cotton textiles.

This adjustment aligns with governmental notifications dated August 10, 2023, aimed at ensuring fair compensation reflective of current economic conditions. Such initiatives underscore the commitment to safeguarding the livelihoods and well-being of Goa’s workforce amidst evolving economic landscapes.
