The National Organ And Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) is set up to establish a network for organ procurement and distribution and to maintain a national registry for the purpose of surveillance of organ donation and transplantation in the country.
NOTTO has observed that certain websites and social media posts are promoting illegal organ trading. This is violation of the Transplantation of Human Organ & Tissue Act, 1994 and its rules.
Illegal organ trading is a serious crime that can result in a fine of Rs. 20 lakhs to Rs. 1 crore and imprisonment for 5-10 years.
Therefore, NOTTO has urged all state authorities to take stringent steps to deal with such illegal activities. Authorities have been urged to prevent and control organ trafficking and to put in place a system to monitor these activities.
