NPPA Updates Data Requirements for Fixing Drug Prices in India

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has issued a new office memorandum regarding data submission for fixing ceiling prices of essential medicines. This OM was dated June 5, 2024.

NPPA had also previously requested Price To Retailer (PTR) and Moving Annual Turnover (MAT) data for July 2022. Subsequently in a meeting dated January 24, 2024, the NPPA has decided to request manufacturers and marketing companies to submit this data for October 2023.

What Data is Needed?

Companies must provide the following information for each specified formulation:

  1. Price to Retailer (PTR): The price at which the drug is sold to retailers and
  2. Moving Annual Turnover (MAT) Sales Value: Total sales of the drug (excluding taxes) from November 2022 to October 2023.

This data must be submitted in the format prescribed as Table 1 of this OM. The OM lists a total of 134 formulations for which this data is requested.

Submission Deadline

The information must be submitted within 10 days of this notice, i.e. by June 15, 2024.

This data is crucial for the NPPA to set fair and transparent ceiling prices for essential medicines under the revised Schedule I of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013 (DPCO).

By using more recent data, the NPPA aims to ensure that ceiling prices accurately reflect current market conditions. This can influence the affordability of essential medicines in India.
