“Tax Relief: West Bengal Extends Filing Deadline”

In response to the ongoing challenges faced by taxpayers, the Government of West Bengal, through the Directorate of Commercial Taxes, has announced an extension of the deadline for filing tax returns. The decision comes in light of the compelling situation necessitating additional time for compliance with the West Bengal State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings, and Employments Act, 1979. This notification was published on May 31, 2024.

The extension, exercised under Rule 12 of the aforementioned Act, supersedes previous orders and provides relief for taxpayers. Notably, the extension applies to returns for the period ending on March 31, 2024.

Furthermore, taxpayers are urged to take advantage of the extended deadline to ensure timely submission of their returns. It’s imperative to note that returns filed within the extended period, accompanied by the requisite tax payments made by April 30, 2024, will not incur late fees, as per the provisions of the Act. This extension underscores the government’s commitment to facilitating tax compliance while acknowledging the challenges faced by taxpayers during these times. It is a measure aimed at easing the burden on taxpayers and ensuring smooth adherence to tax regulations.
