India’s Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL) has launched the Implementation Manual of Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI). This launch marked the commemoration of the occasion of ‘World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2024’.
This manual assists schools in implementing guidelines set by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It empowers stakeholders to protect students from tobacco use.
DoSEL officials emphasized the importance of safeguarding children from tobacco addiction, not just for health reasons but also as a moral obligation.
The DoSEL Joint Secretary also highlighted the need for collaboration between all stakeholders to combat student tobacco use. According to the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), 2019, 8.5% of students aged 13-15 consume tobacco.
Government’s Multi-Pronged Approach
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also held events to observe WNTD 2024, focusing on the theme “Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference.” The MoHFW will ensure the following is implemented:
- Strict Enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 or COTPA, 2003
- Public awareness campaigns will be intensified to educate people about the dangers of tobacco.
- The initiative to create tobacco-free educational institutions will be expanded nationwide.
- Establishing tobacco-free villages across India is a new goal.
Badminton champion PV Sindhu was named the brand ambassador for Tobacco Control. She urged youth to choose a tobacco-free life.
Operational guidelines for establishing tobacco cessation centers in medical institutions were unveiled. This aims to educate medical students and offer cessation services to tobacco users.
The Ministry has also launched an online “No Tobacco Pledge” through the MyGov platform, encouraging widespread participation.
Additionally, an oral screening and tobacco cessation camp was organized under the National Oral Health Programme.
These initiatives demonstrate India’s strong commitment to protecting children from tobacco use and promoting a healthier future for all.
