Extended Deadline for Battery Recycling Compliance and Reporting

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has issued an update regarding deadlines for battery Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance and annual return submissions. This clarification applies to the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022.

Batteries covered under the 21 products listed in Schedule I of the old E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, will follow the compliance timelines set under those rules for FY 2022-23.

Compliance targets for all other batteries placed on the market in FY 2022-23 will be in FY 2023-2024.

Producers are required to submit annual returns on the EPR portal for both FY 2022-23 and FY 2023-24.

The deadline for both EPR target compliance and annual return submission for batteries placed on the market in FY 2022-23 and for 2023-2024 is June 30, 2024.

This extension provides producers with additional time to meet their obligations under the new Battery Waste Management Rules. Producers are advised to ensure they are aware of the specific categories their batteries fall under and take necessary actions to comply by the deadline.
