The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has issued clarifications regarding the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. These clarifications were issued by a notice dated May 28, 2024.
These clarifications address two key points:
1. Domestically Recycled Materials:
The requirement for “minimum use of domestically recycled materials” in battery manufacturing applies to any type of material obtained from recycling waste products within India. This includes lithium, cobalt, aluminum, graphite, paper, plastic, carbon, and more, not just materials specifically from waste batteries.
2. Labeling Requirements for Imported Batteries:
For imported batteries or battery packs, the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) registration number can be displayed on either the:
- equipment containing the battery
- packaging of the equipment containing the battery
This clarifies that producers of imported batteries comply with labeling requirements as long as the EPR registration number is visible on one of these two locations.
