India Boosts Animal Health with Digital Vaccine Management

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to improve animal health management in India. This memorandum was signed on May 20, 2024 and a press release was issued marking this occasion.

Digitalization of Vaccine Cold Chain

The initiative aims to implement a digital system to track vaccine stocks, flow, and storage temperatures. It shall also utilize UNDP’s Animal Vaccine Intelligence Network (AVIN) for monitoring with new technologies like AI.

Through the MOU, technical assistance will be provided to the Central Institute for Animal Health (CEAH). This will thereby lead to an enhancement in skills and knowledge of stakeholders in animal husbandry. It also encourages extension services and skill development initiatives.

The initiative also focuses on developing a communication strategy to better inform the public about DAHD’s initiatives.

Importance of the Initiative

Strengthening animal health is crucial to prevent zoonotic diseases (diseases transmissible between animals and humans). The initiative also supports the development of an effective livestock insurance program.

Efficient vaccine management ensures proper immunization coverage for livestock. This collaboration aims to create a robust and inclusive framework for animal health and welfare.

Challenges Addressed

India’s vast animal population (over 500 crore) requires a complex cold chain infrastructure for vaccine storage. Maintaining proper vaccine temperature (2-8°C) is critical for effectiveness.

The MoU seeks to address infrastructure, information systems, and human resource limitations.
