FSSAI permits hotels to serve drinking water in paper sealed glass bottles

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on 9th September, 2019 released a notification allowing hotels to serve drinking water in paper sealed glass bottles exclusively to in house guests as a commitment to environment sustainability.

This decision came in as a response to the representations from hotels asking FSSAI for the same as , presently the hotels are using plastic bottles, the usage of which results in considerable plastic wastage.

The usage of paper sealed reusable glass bottles for captive use within the hotel premises is subject to the following conditions: 

  • The paper sealed glass water bottles will be served free of cost to in-house guests and will not be for sale. 
  • The label of the paper sealed glass bottles is required to prominently specify “Not for Sale” which should be accompanied with the name and address of the hotel.
  • The hotels are also required to set up in-house drinking water bottling  systems in their premises and follow appropriate sanitation and hygienic  conditions as prescribed under schedule IV of FSS (Incensing and Registration  of food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
  • The packaging/covering of the paper sealed glass bottle is to be done so as to not be covered under the definition of Packaged Drinking Water as specified under the FSS Act 2006 and Regulations.
  • The water served is required to conform to BIS specification IS 500:2012(specification for drinking water).
