Spilling The Tea On March 2024 Production Estimates

The Tea Board has released its latest estimates on tea production in India for March 2024. The estimates highlight an overall decrease in production of tea in the country. These estimates were published on May 2, 2024.

According to the report, the total estimated production of tea in India for March 2024 was 62.52 million kilograms (MKgs). This is a marked decrease from the 79.61 million kilograms produced in March 2023.

Decrease in Production in North India

The majority of tea production in India comes from North India, which includes the states of Assam and West Bengal. The estimated production of tea in North India for March 2024 was 45.94 million kilograms, down from 65.78 million kilograms in March 2023. Assam Valley is the largest tea-producing district in North India, with an estimated production of 19.25 million kilograms in March 2024. However, it has witnessed a drastic decline in production from 33.38 million kilograms in March 2023.

Slight Increase in Production in South India

South India, which includes the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, produced an estimated 16.58 million kilograms of tea in March 2024. This is a slight increase from the 13.83 million kilograms produced in March 2023. Tamil Nadu is the largest tea-producing state in South India, with an estimated production of 11.76 million kilograms in March 2024.

The Tea Board of India has also released its latest estimates on category-wise tea production in India for March 2024. According to the total estimated production of tea in India for March 2024, CTC (Cut, Tear, Curl) tea is the most common type of black tea produced in India. Orthodox tea is a processed black tea whole leaves are plucked and oxidized before drying. Green tea is minimally processed and unoxidized.

The estimates also reveal that North India is the dominant producer of tea in India. This region produced an estimated 45.94 million kilograms of tea in March 2024, while South India produced 16.58 million kilograms.
