Ensuring Voter Participation: Puducherry Declares Holiday for General Elections

The democratic process lies at the heart of every vibrant society, serving as the cornerstone of governance by providing citizens with the opportunity to elect their representatives. In line with this fundamental principle, the Government of Puducherry has taken a proactive step to encourage voter participation in the upcoming general elections to the Lok Sabha of India.

Issuing Circular dated 3rd April, 2024, the Department of Labor has declared a holiday for all workers on April 19, 2024, the day of the scheduled elections. This decision, in accordance with Section 135-B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, aims to facilitate the voting process for all eligible citizens residing in the Union Territory of Puducherry, including the regions of Karaikal, Enam, and Mahe.

The Act mandates that every person employed in a trade, business, industrial establishment, or other establishment, who is entitled to vote in elections to the Lok Sabha or Legislative Assembly, shall be granted one day’s holiday on the day of the election. Moreover, it stipulates that no deduction or reduction of salary shall be made to a person granted leave for voting, and in case such leave is denied, the individual should be compensated accordingly.

The decision to declare a holiday underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a robust democratic culture and ensuring that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to cast their vote without any impediments. By providing workers with the time and opportunity to participate in the electoral process, the government aims to enhance voter turnout and strengthen the democratic fabric of the region.

In conclusion, the announcement of a holiday for workers on the day of the general elections reflects a concerted effort by the Government of Puducherry to uphold democratic values and promote inclusive participation in the electoral process. By prioritizing voter convenience and accessibility, the government sets a commendable example for fostering a vibrant and participatory democracy.
