Relaxed Regulations for Drug offenses in India To Be Enforced In December

The Central Government has notified the date of enforcement of relaxed penalties for certain drug-related offenses. This notification was issued on March 28, 2024.

This notification has been issued under the ambit of the Jan Vishwas Act. The government has fixed December 31st, 2024 as the date on which the provisions relating to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 will come into force.

It may be recalled that the Jan Vishwas Act, 2023, was notified on August 11, 2023. The Act aims to streamline regulations and reduce the burden on the justice system.

The present amendments in particular replace the penalty of imprisonment with fines for specific offenses related to drugs and cosmetics.
