The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on June 25, 2019, in furtherance to objections and suggestions received regarding the draft of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2018, effected Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on sales) First Amendment Regulations, 2019.
With this latest amendment the Authority forbidden the use of diacetyl as flavoring substance in oils and fats. Diacetyl is a chemical compound which is used as a flavoring agent in foods to give butter like taste. FSSAI’s reasons to outlaw diacetyl despite being considered as safe for human consumption, is its fuming properties that causes major lung diseases through inhalation Thus, the amendment seeks to reduce consumers exposure to diacetyl for health concerns.
