Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has directed the Commissioners of Food Safety of respective States and Union Territories to carry out surveillance in the area of their respective jurisdiction to study the various types of claims being made with respect to the products that are covered under the scope of Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016.
An Action Taken report on the market surveillance of the products needs to be prepared as per the format provided in the notification and the same needs to be communicated to this office by 15 July,2019.
The claims that have been made on the products covered under the above mentioned regulations are required to comply with the provisions mentioned under regulation 4 of these Regulations. This direction has been notified via the notification released by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India released on 29 June, 2019 and has been made in light of the products (which are covered under the aforementioned regulations) that are being marketed with inexact and amplified health benefit claims.
