Initiatives for a Greener Future: Tamil Nadu’s Climate Change Missions

The Chancellor of Shiv Nadar University, Chennai, presented a donation of INR 10 Crores to the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company. The cheque was accepted by Additional Chief Secretary of the Environment, Climate Change, and Forest Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. This contribution from Shiv Nadar University is part of their Community Resource Augmentation and aims to enhance the State’s green cover and establish Blue Green Centers across the State. This Notification was published on 08.03.2024.

The Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company, established in January 2022 by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forest as a Section 8 Not-for-Profit entity, is leading efforts to tackle climate change challenges in the State. This company, a pioneering initiative in the country, serves as the overarching organization for its four flagship missions. The Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, which focuses on endeavors such as Climate Smart Villages, Green Schools, and green indexing of cities, aims to create a climate-resilient future for Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, the State has undertaken ambitious initiatives under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, striving to increase the current green cover from 23.8% to 33%, and the Wetlands Mission, dedicated to ecologically restoring the state’s wetlands. Additionally, with the recent launch of the Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission, the State is dedicated to bolstering its coastal resilience and enhancing coastal biodiversity. This collaboration between the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company and Shiv Nadar University highlights a shared dedication to environmental sustainability and sets a precedent for impactful green initiatives.
