The Chief Minister of Kerala has announced plans to elevate the APJ Abdul Kalam University of Science and Technology to global standards, aiming to align with the job demands of the modern era. The administration block, spanning 50 acres, marks a significant milestone towards establishing the university’s own headquarters. In 2017, the state government initiated the decision to construct the headquarters, with the final land acquisition notification issued in 2021 after meticulous surveying. The acquisition, costing ₹185 crore and involving 1135 owners, was completed with the cooperation of the local community. A budget allocation of ₹71 crore in this year’s budget has been designated for the construction, facilitating the development of a seven-storey, one lakh square feet block equipped with cutting-edge amenities and eco-friendly features. The comprehensive campus, including the headquarters, is slated for development in multiple phases, with an estimated expenditure exceeding ₹1000 crore. This initiative aims to benefit all technical education stakeholders, including students, educators, and researchers, with plans underway to establish seven teaching and research schools at the university headquarters. Recognizing the pivotal role of advanced technologies in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the government is strategically investing in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Plans include establishing four science parks across the state, with construction already underway for the Digital Science Park, India’s first digital university, and the Life Science Park Institute of Virology. Additionally, the Kerala Space Park (K Space) aims to propel space research, complemented by efforts to promote industries suited for Kerala, such as electric vehicle manufacturing and IT.
