In a significant development, the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and adjoining areas has issued Order on 19th February, 2024, revoking actions under Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and intensifying measures under Stage I. This strategic shift, prompted by improved air quality in Delhi and favorable meteorological forecasts, underscores the dynamic nature of environmental governance and the need for adaptive responses to air quality challenges.
The decision to revoke Stage II actions, previously invoked due to deteriorating air quality conditions, reflects a positive trend in Delhi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) over the past few days. With the AQI consistently below 300 since 15th February, 2024, and recorded at 231 on 19th February, 2024, well below the Stage II threshold, the Sub-Committee acknowledges the improved air quality scenario and the encouraging forecasts by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).
In light of these positive developments, the Sub-Committee has swiftly acted to revoke the Stage II actions under the GRAP, effective immediately. However, recognizing the importance of sustained efforts to maintain air quality standards, actions under Stage I of the GRAP remain in force. All relevant agencies in the National Capital Region (NCR) are tasked with implementing, monitoring, and intensifying measures outlined in Stage I to prevent any regression in air quality levels and ensure continued progress towards healthier air quality standards.
This strategic recalibration exemplifies the Commission’s proactive approach to air quality management, balancing responsive actions with a forward-looking strategy that prioritizes environmental sustainability and public health. By leveraging real-time data, expert forecasts, and collaborative efforts among stakeholders, the Commission aims to safeguard air quality in the region and mitigate the impact of pollution on the well-being of residents.
As the Commission continues to adapt its response strategies in alignment with changing conditions, the commitment to effective air quality management remains unwavering. Through ongoing vigilance, strategic interventions, and stakeholder collaboration, the Commission endeavors to sustainably improve air quality in the NCR, setting a precedent for proactive environmental governance and public health protection.
