The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has unveiled the Third Advance Estimate of area and production for various horticultural crops for the fiscal year 2022-23. A press release on this estimate was issued on January 18, 2024.
The results of the estimate show a remarkable achievement in the agriculture sector, with an estimated total horticulture production of 355.25 million tonnes, reflecting an increase of 2.32% (8.07 million tonnes) compared to the previous year.
The Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister credited this consistent upward trend in horticulture production to the collective efforts of farmers, scientists, and the agriculture-friendly policies implemented by the central government.
According to the Third Advance Estimate, the production of fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, spices, flowers, and honey is expected to witness an increase for the year 2022-23. Fruit production is projected to rise to 109.53 million tonnes, up from 107.51 million tonnes in the previous year (2021-22).
Vegetable production is estimated to reach 213.88 million tonnes, from the 209.14 million tonnes recorded in 2021-22. The production of plantation crops is also set to rise, with an estimated 16.84 million tonnes in 2022-23 compared to 15.76 million tonnes in the preceding year, reflecting a growth of approximately 6.80%.
Potato production is anticipated to reach 60.22 million tonnes, up from 56.18 million tonnes in 2021-22. Meanwhile, tomato production is estimated at 20.37 million tonnes for the current fiscal year, slightly down from 20.69 million tonnes in the previous year.
