The Central Government has designated specific ports for the repatriation of red sanders from Nepal. It has now added 6 more ports to its list of designated ports for Regulation of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora as per the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. This notification was issued on January 18, 2024.
It may be recalled that Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) had issued a notification designating Ports of Entry and Exist for Regulation of International Trade in Endangered Species dated 8th August, 2023.
Now, by the present notification the MOEFCC has added the following ports as designated entry and exit points for the repatriation of red sanders:
- Ruxaul
- Panitanki
- Jogbani
- Sanauli
- Nepalgunj
- Banbasa
The ports of entry and exist have been designated for the purpose of regulation of International Trade of red sanders between India and Nepal, ensuring strict adherence to environmental regulations and international trade norms.
The inclusion of Nepalgunj, situated in Nepal, underscores the cooperative efforts between the two neighboring nations to address environmental concerns and preserve valuable natural resources.
By making these amendments, the Central Government aims to streamline and monitor the repatriation process effectively. The move is expected to curb unauthorized trade activities and contribute to the sustainable management of red sanders, a precious timber species often subject to illegal logging and smuggling.
