Telangana Government to bring in ‘New Power (Electricity) Policy’

Chief Minister propounded the need to implement a comprehensive power policy in Telangana State after conducting a detailed study of the existing power policies adopted by various state governments and holding discussion with Energy experts and in the State Legislative Assembly. Chief Minister discussed the issues of power consumption, supply of 24 hours uninterrupted power, power generation by the companies, measures for new power generation units, 200 units free power supply under the Gruha Jyothi scheme with the officials and the Ministers. The officials briefed the CM about the installed capacity of electricity generation in Telangana, power purchases from various power utilities, regular power consumption, performance and the financial situation of the DISCOMS. This Notification was published on the date of 10.12.2024.

The Chief Minister has directed officials to conduct a thorough study and submit a detailed report on electricity agreements made by companies and the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) from 2014 onwards. This includes a review of agreement contents, power purchase charges, and reasons for engaging in agreements with higher-priced suppliers. The Government aims to explore agreements with companies offering lower prices in the open market. Prior to implementing a new power policy, consultations with energy experts and representatives from all political parties will be undertaken. The Government remains committed to providing 24-hour free power supply to farmers and plans to offer up to 200 units of free electricity to households through the Gruha Jyothi scheme. Emphasis is placed on preventing electricity theft and enhancing power supply quality. The Chief Minister has urged officials to take strong and proactive measures to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity in the State.
