The Department of Hematology & Stem Cell Transplantation at the Army Hospital R&R in Delhi Cantt. has successfully conducted a life-saving Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) for a child diagnosed with a rare primary immunodeficiency disorder. This procedure, performed on 7-year-old Sushant Paudel, marks a significant milestone in medical science and also brings newfound hope to families facing similar challenges.
Sushant, the son of Sepoy Pradip Paudel, was diagnosed with ARPC1b, an exceptionally rare form of immunodeficiency at the age of one. This condition severely compromised his immune system, leaving him susceptible to recurrent life-threatening infections and complications. The young patient was referred to the Army Hospital (R&R) six months ago, but the absence of a Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) matched sibling donor posed a significant challenge.
Despite this, the Hematology team at the hospital embarked on an exhaustive journey to identify a suitable donor and meticulously plan a bone marrow transplant. The Matched Unrelated Donor (MUD) transplant, conducted on November 30, 2023, involved harvesting healthy stem cells from a voluntary unrelated donor with HLA compatibility. These cells were then infused into Sushant’s bloodstream after his defective cells were eradicated through a rigorous regimen of high-dose chemotherapy.
The successful procedure aimed to replace the compromised immune cells with healthy ones, providing Sushant with a renewed chance at a healthy and vibrant life.
The Head of the Hematology department, emphasized the collaborative efforts of the medical team, the unwavering support of Sushant’s family, and the generosity of the donor.
The Senior Advisor in the Hematology department, highlighted the significance of having HLA-matched Unrelated donor stem cells, sourced in this case from DATRI, as a game-changer for patients suffering from life-threatening immunodeficiency disorders. Further, the Pediatric Hematologist at AHRR, noted the challenging and high-risk nature of the transplant, given the presence of multiple active infections at the time.
