The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the reported outbreak of H9N2 cases and clusters of respiratory illness in children in northern China. While the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a statement regarding the situation, the Union Health Ministry assures that there is a low risk to India from both the avian influenza case reported from China and the clusters of respiratory illness. Media reports have highlighted the clustering of respiratory illness cases in children in northern China, prompting WHO’s attention. However, based on the current information available, the reported increase in respiratory diseases in China in recent weeks is attributed to the usual causes affecting children. No identification of an unusual pathogen or unexpected clinical manifestations has been reported.
A recent meeting, chaired by the Director-General of Health Services (DGHS), discussed preparedness measures against human cases of Avian Influenza in India. The backdrop of a human case of H9N2 (Avian influenza virus) reported to WHO in October 2023 in China was a focal point of the discussion. WHO’s overall risk assessment indicates a low probability of human-to-human spread and a low case fatality rate among reported human cases of H9N2.
Recognizing the need for strengthened surveillance in human, animal husbandry, and wildlife sectors, as well as improved coordination, the meeting emphasized India’s preparedness for any public health exigency. India is adopting a One Health approach to address public health issues comprehensively and integratively. The country has significantly strengthened its health infrastructure, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Prime Minister-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) was launched to develop capacities across all levels of care, from primary to tertiary, ensuring an effective response to current and future pandemics and disasters. Additionally, India’s surveillance and detection networks, under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), have gained valuable experience in managing challenging health situations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
