AIIMS Bhopal Declared as a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has designated All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal as a Centre of Excellence (coE) for Rare Diseases. This designation is in accordance with the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021. An Office Memorandum (OM) on this desigantion was issued dated November 6, 2023 was published on November 23, 2023.

Thus, AIIMS Bhopal will now function as a premier government tertiary hospital. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of rare diseases. This recognition positions the institution at the forefront of addressing complex medical conditions that are not commonly encountered in routine healthcare practices.

Under the directives of Para 9.2 of the NPRD, 2021, AIIMS Bhopal will engage in activities aimed at fulfilling the objectives outlined in the national policy. The provisions of the policy emphasize the importance of specialized care, research, and awareness in the realm of rare diseases.

This designation comes into effect immediately from November 6, 2023. The inclusion of AIIMS Bhopal as a Center of Excellence for Rare Diseases is expected to enhance the overall healthcare landscape and contribute significantly to advancements in the field of rare disease research and treatment.
