R&D Roadmap for Green Hydrogen Ecosystem in India

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has published the R&D Roadmap for Green Hydrogen Ecosystem in India. This document was published on 13th October, 2023.

One of the central pillars of the National Green Hydrogen Mission is the establishment of a supportive research and innovation ecosystem for green hydrogen within India. In preparation for the mission’s launch, an inclusive effort involving key stakeholders from the Government, Industry, and Academia has resulted in the formulation of a comprehensive roadmap. This roadmap outlines the current status of research and technology development in India and presents recommendations for a national research and innovation roadmap to bolster the green hydrogen ecosystem.

The drafting committee responsible for this roadmap comprised experts and representatives from a wide array of organizations, including the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, NITI Aayog, Department of Science & Technology, Department of Atomic Energy, Defense Research and Development Organization, Indian Space Research Organization, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., and academic institutions such as IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, and others. The committee was coordinated by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The committee’s work was supported by thematic sub-committees dedicated to hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and applications. These sub-committees provided insights on specific aspects, enabling the creation of a comprehensive roadmap that addresses the entire green hydrogen value chain. The roadmap, which has been drafted after an exhaustive analysis of the current state of technology and ongoing research, benchmarking, and identifying gaps, lays out a clear path for research and development actions to promote green hydrogen commercialization.

It is expected that this draft roadmap will serve as a guiding document for establishing a dynamic research and development ecosystem necessary for the commercialization of green hydrogen.
