TRAI regulatory framework for promoting the data economy

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on November 18, 2022, released recommendations to the regulatory framework. The salient features of the recommendations are as follows

•Facilitating & Incentivizing the establishment of Data Centres (DCs) and DC Parks.

•Developing India-specific building norms, standards, and security certification framework.

•Regulation has Connectivity to Cable Landing Stations (CLS).

•DC and DC Park sites should be allowed to operate as backup power infrastructure without hindrance from state pollution control boards (SPCB) or Central pollution control boards (CPCB).

•Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) should be entrusted with framing certification standards for green DCs in India. 

•National Telecom Institute for Policy Research & Training (NTIPRIT) under the Department of Telecommunication (DoT), MeitY, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC) should closely collaborate with the DC industry to develop tailor-made short and long-term courses. 

•Addressing demand side issues of Digital Data Infrastructure.

•Content Delivery Networks and Interconnect Exchanges in India are very significant factors.

The new framework seeks promotion of the data economy through the establishment of data centers, content delivery networks, and interconnect exchanges in India.

RECENT UPDATES
