Compulsory insurance for every road user in India

The Central Government on 25 February, 2022 has appointed the 1st day of April, 2022 as the date on which the following provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 shall come into force, namely: —

  1. Section 50;
  2. Section 51;
  3. Section 52;
  4. Section 53;
  5. Section 54;
  6. Section 55;
  7. Section 56;
  8. Section 57; and
  9. Section 93.

These provisions have provided for INSURANCE OF MOTOR VEHICLES AGAINST THIRD PARTY RISKS. The Amendment introduces compulsory insurance which will be available for every road user in India. It will be utilised for treatment of people injured in road accidents as per the golden hour scheme. No person shall use, except as a passenger, or cause or allow any other person to use, a motor vehicle in a public place, unless there is in force, in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person or that other person, as the case may be, a policy of insurance.
