Government Proposes Stronger Scrutiny for GMO Approvals
In a recent landmark judgment, the Supreme Court directed the government to strengthen conflict-of-interest regulations for experts involved in GMO approvals. Therefore, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has proposed amendments to the existing regulations governing genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Government Extends Compliance Deadline for Small Drug Manufacturers
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced a proposed extension for small and medium drug manufacturers to comply with the revised Schedule M of the Drugs Rules, 1945. Following industry representations, the government has decided to extend the compliance deadline for manufacturers with a turnover of ₹250 crore or less. These companies can now apply for an extension until December 31, 2025. To avail of the extension, manufacturers must submit an application to the Central Licensing Approving Authority (CLAA) by April 4, 2025.
Public Consultation Invited on Alternative Mechanism for Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FFPAS) Charges
A fixed “Base Fuel and Power Price Adjustment Surcharge” (Base FPPAS) would be collected from consumers along with their monthly electricity bills. The State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) would determine the Base FPPAS as a percentage of the monthly average billing rate. This percentage would be based on the average FPPAS of the past three years and the DISCOM’s proposal for the current year.
Central Government Employees to Receive Extended Leave for Organ Donation
Central Government employees can now avail up to 42 days of Special Casual Leave for organ donation, regardless of the type of organ donated. The leave should ideally be taken in one continuous stretch, starting from the day of hospital admission. However, it can begin up to one week prior to the surgery if recommended by a government-registered medical practitioner.
