DPIIT publishes “Operational Guidelines for financial assistance for undertaking the initiatives for promotion of Geographical Indications (GIs)”

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has published “Operational Guidelines for financial assistance for undertaking the initiatives for promotion of Geographical Indications (GIs)”.

DPIIT has adopted the National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy in 2016 to develop an IPR ecosystem as IPR are significant drivers of the socio-economic, cultural and industrial development the country. One of the objectives of National IPR policy was awareness and outreach including GI awareness and promotion.

In accordance with the objectives of National IPR Policy, Government of India will provide financial assistance to eligible agencies for undertaking initiatives for Promotion of Geographical Indications , which aims to create awareness about significance of GIs and its uniqueness, promoting registered Indian GIs, identify potential GIs and encourage stakeholders towards registration, and also assist in skill development and capacity building through, but not limited to, technology upgradation and enhancing competitiveness.
