Ministry of Commerce and Industry revises SIPP Scheme

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a press release on the revision of the scheme for facilitating Start-Ups Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP) on 2nd December, 2022. The revised scheme has increased the facilitation fees by at least 100%. This revised scheme is applicable from 2nd November 2022.

The following has been stated namely: –

• The scheme facilitated start-ups in filing and processing their patent, design, or trademark application through the assistance of IP Facilitators, whose fee was borne by the Office of the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Government of India.

• After its successful implementation resulting in a significant increase in IP filings by start-ups the Scheme was extended for a period of three years till 31st March, 2023.

• In addition, IP filling by start-ups is also encouraged by providing fee rebates under respective IP legislations.

Start-ups are provided an 80% fee rebate in filing patent applications and a 50% fee rebate in filing trademark applications. In addition, there are also provisions for fast-track examination of patent applications.
